Gambling Bill has Infuriated Seniors - Hurts the Margate Veteran Organization
The SB1030 has passed unanimously by 15 – 0 on Tuesday and last week in the House (HB 155) by 108-7, this outlaws the redemption arcades that are in the state. The Arcades have been added to the group of internet gambling sites, when playing on slot like machines have cash awards, it is not like gift cards for restaurants, service providers or retailers. This will effectively destroy many older residents social life and their enjoyment will be removed effectively once this bill has been passed. Phyllis Henrich has said that it was unfair that these arcade games are being lumped with internet gambling. She continued that it was entirely different, many people cannot afford to go to the big casinos, especially seniors who are on a limited income. Ms Henrich and about thirty other people marched expressing their opposition to the bill outside the Rio Bingo and the Arcade in Pompano last Friday. If this bill is passed the backlash in Margate will be felt by non profit veteran organization, Amvets Post 1939. These veterans count on a monthly bingo game at the Rio, where the proceeds helps pay their utilities at the State Road 7, clubhouse. 100% of the proceeds from the Bingo proceeds goes toward offsetting approximately $600 a month for the operational costs of the organization.
